Description: The objective of this project was to establish the cooperation platform between the visualization groups at the University of Bergen and the Masaryk University. This platform forms the basis for joining closely related research and education activities currently ongoing in both groups.

Description: The project aims at enhancing research collaboration between the Institute of Computer Graphics and Algorithms, Vienna University of Technology and the Department of Computer Graphics and Design, Laboratory of Human-Computer Interaction at the Faculty of Informatics, Masaryk University in Brno. The cooperation focuses mainly on the interactive visualization of dynamically changing macromolecular structures. The examining of the behavior of large biological systems is one of the key areas in the current research in the field of biochemistry, bioinformatics, and computer graphics.


Analysis and visualization of protein structures (GAP202/10/1435) link

Description: The main aim of the project is to develop and test new analytic methods that could be used in protein research, namely methods for analysis of geometric properties of proteins that aim to detect tunnels in protein structures. These protein tunnels connect the active site buried inside the protein with its molecular surface. The tunnel features, such as its surface, volume, length, etc., are statistically evaluated for large sets of time steps obtained from the molecular dynamics simulations. The results are then visualized to provide new information to biochemists. The project is a continuation of the project GA201/07/0927 Visualization of protein structures, supported in 2007-2009.

The project focuses on research methods for visualization of proteins. Using methods from computational geometry, the spatial relationships in protein structures are analyzed. 3D Voronoi diagrams are employed for the analysis of large proteins. The project also addresses new methods of visualization using virtual reality to reveal details about the analyzed protein. Another part of the project focuses on an interactive modification of protein structure in selected areas of tunnels through the exchange of residues and their rotamers (so called mutagenesis).
